Immeuble Plessis



The Plessis  Building(Rue Baudrière in angers ) is built between 1939 and 1940 for François Plessis, a baker. This building is designed by  architect Georges Montier. The mosaics of porcelain stoneware are made by Pierre De Guisti. Their signatures is on the front...

Blue fountain.



In 1931, under the direction of the architect Henri Jamard, the mosaicist Isidore Odorico  completely revamps the facade of this bistro on the Place du Ralliement in Angers (now less visible from the street, sheltered under a veranda) in a pure Art-Deco style.  The year Next he opened a branch of his workshop ofRennes in Angers.

Notre Dame de toute grâce.



    The church of Notre-Dame de Toute Grâce du Plateau d'Assy (Our Lady Full of Grace ) is a Roman Catholic church built on the plateau d'Assy between 1937 and 1946, in a aera dedicated to sanatoriums and healing institutions built in ethe 20's and 30's to cure tubercolusis and other diseases before antibiotics spread. It faces Mont Blanc. The church is unique for its decoration, designed by some of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. It is also viewed as an important step  in the development of modern sacred art, although its consecration in 1950 raised some consternation within the french clergy....
 The facade is decorated by mosaïcs made after a drawing of famous painter Fernand Léger.

House of cards


On the  casino wall in Le Tréport, small seaside town in Normandy, this mosaïc designed by Helen Mai represents the Red Queen preparing to cut the head of Alice. It was made in the late 1950's by Atelier Gaudin .



  Helen MAI, is the pseudonym of Jeanne Lartigue, french painter (1903-1995). She especially worked on  encaustic paintings, wall ceramics, mosaics and sculptures in public places.

Villa Raphaeli-Surany




Built in 1902 by architect Adam Dettloff for Mr. Raffaelli, the Villa Surany at 35 Boulevard de Cimiez, is a typical Belle Epoque building with its oriental style mosaic friezes and marble columns.





  Although mosaïcs are in  quite good condition, the rest of the building is currently undergoing a global facelift. Come and see it in a year or so!

Orthodoxy




The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedra in Nice is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe.It was consecrated in December 1912 in memory of Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsarevich of Russia, who died in Nice. Built in the style typical for 16th century churches of Moscow and Yaroslavl, the cathedral has five domes.




     Colorful stones, bricks and ceramics were used for the finishing of the  façade  On top of the green tiled onion domes are gilded crosses. Windows that are decorated with a tin-glazed pottery called majolica , not to forget a mosaic of the Holy Face of Christ.

Postal Service

  From 1925 to 1929, a modern postal facility, designed by Léon Jaussely  is built by the  Edmond Coignet company  near the Saint Jean train station in Bordeaux.
 Art Déco mosaïcs are designed by Gentil and Bourdet, of Paris .

Remains


 The Roman basilica in Vezelay used to be the gathering/starting point for pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela.
 The pillars look now unornamented.... but one can detect the remains of mosaïc coverages, as well as frescoes.
